Your FIFA opponent
This isn’t as straight forward as you might have thought and has changed in FIFA 13 compared to previous versions. You are matched up based on certain criteria. (edit 11th Oct 2014)same in FIFA14 and FIFA15.
1. Location
To try to make FIFA online less laggy and a better experience FIFA 13 tries to make your opponent within a certain distance. The number of times we have seen the opponent be from the same town is very high. Unfotunately we come from a town of very good FIFA players. Also our connections haven’t been better in FIFA 13 on UT or H2H. They were good up to January when TOTY came out and lots of problems with the EASFC service and trade piles. Doesn’t help that ISPs throttle connections at peak times and people choose to download or are on shared connections when playing FIFA. Interestingly on Virgin Gaming we experience much smoother gameplay with no erratic ball physics etc. As people on Virgin Gaming are located anywhere in the world we believe there is a fault with how FIFA 13 works out the quality of connection and there are issues somewhere with the connection quality rating when locally matched.
2. FIFA ELO system
What the **** is ELO? Well to quote wikipedia “The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in two-player games such as chess. It is named after its creator Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-born American physics professor.”
Each player has a numerical rating. A higher number indicates a better player, based on results against other rated players. The winner of a contest between two players gains a certain number of points in his or her rating and the losing player loses the same amount. The number of points won or lost in a contest depends on the difference in the ratings of the players, so a player will gain more points by beating a higher-rated player than by beating a lower-rated player. In chess, for instance, if player A is rated 100 points higher than player B, it is expected that player A will win about five out of eight games played. Over a series of games if either player does better than expected his or her rating will go up.”
The way FIFA 13 decides the ELO is from various stats. Not just your record of wins to losses so you can’t just loose lots offline to suddenly find easier opponents online. Depends who you win and lose against and their ELO rating. We aren’t fully sure if ELO is used in every mode in FIFA 13. We know it is used in divisions but is it used in the tournaments too? So hard to attempt to work out how good an opponent is and how you are matched up when 80% of the players we meet are desperate to win so do the counter attack long through ball to pace on the counter. These people gain the same ELO as us which is a shame really. Imagine if the system worked so all those players played against each other and the rest of us who want to pass and skill and score creative goals were matched against each other. Really don’t have a problem losing to someone who has learned the better side of the game. Its called enjoyment.
3. The rating of your team
Usually in H2H you have filters set for this but the rating is more for Ultimate Team. In FIFA 13 this is more strict than previous. We used to play against 86 and higher rated teams and beat them with 80 rated teams. Which was fun. Now that doesn’t happen we are nearly always matched to an equally rated team. You will hear the term Bronze bench where a gold team or In forms has bronze players on the bench to bring the team rating down. A little tip for you here. Better players usually don’t have high rated teams. People like us don’t see in Form players being worth the coins even when we can afford them don’t bother buying them. The better FIFA players generally prefer to use lower rated players or silver teams where they have more control of the ball and player. So because of the ELO system and locality the lower rated your team the harder your opponent is likely to be. If you have informs and high rated players but a low rated bench try adding better players to it see if you win a few more.
So in a nutshell EA are removing the fun from FIFA. First less 5* skill players, then no single matches, an ELO system, what next?
4. Playing people in different division to you?
Because of the ELO system the game doesn’t always find people available to play in your division. In H2H divisions you can actually see if you look at the results which one they were in. You will notice lots of games are a different division as people of different ELO levels are in different divisions for various reasons. In Ulitmate team you can’t see what level your opponent was in but it could be up to three divisions different! Usually within two though. Just how it is won’t affect you that much if you don’t know about it (oops now you do). #mindset.
Why can’t I never play against Bayer when I play with Dortmund I’m a big Dortmund fan and i will not swith teams
It matches the team ratings. Dortmund are low in league it has made their rating lower
hi i have recently started playing fifa 15 seasons mode with real madrid . and i have been successful throughout each campaign winning the division title on 8 occations ,i am currently in division 2 in my 9th season . my question is that i have noticed that i only get to play against teams such as barcelona ,bayern and chelsea i did play against manchester city on one occation but either then that i only play against these teams its kind of annoying as if you play a certain team you dont wanna play them again the following match as this becomes boring is there any other way to probibly face other teams ?
It matches the level of the teams. You need to pick a different team to have different opponents.
You present this as facts, but to me knowledge, no one outside EA actually knows this.
What is a fact is that you meet people from other divisions when playing seasons, but I really don’t see why that should lead us to conclude that there is a could be a ELO matchmaking system in place.
An ELO matchmaking system shouldn’t lead to that you got matches with people outside your own division very often. On contrary, it ought to prevent that. And yes, I’m fully aware that there isn’t a 1:1 relationship between skill and division.
I believe the actual reason why you get matched against people from other divisions is that connectivity is the primary matchmaking factor.
Think of it like this: There may be 500.000 players online at a given time, and maybe 60 % of them are playing FUT. 50 % of those are playing FUT seasons. Among those 150.000 players, only the fraction who are trying to start a match at approximately the same time as you are relevant. Let’s say that is 1 in 100. Now, we are down to 1.500 players accross the globe. Some of them are out of range network wise. That leaves us with, say, 15 players. Within that group, the algorithm needs to find someone from your division. I simply doubt that it would be worthwhile to build a ELO system with so few options available.
Regarding connectivity, this isn’t actually a question of geography as much as network access, and although the internet generally does allow you to access geographically nearby ressources faster, there are many exceptions. Thus, there is no reason why EA would want to build a geography bases matchmaking algorithm, whereas a latency based algorithm would make much sense.
And by the way, you can actually check your opponent before a match starts. Simply go to your EA FC page and enter his username instead of yours. This will allow you to see his division, track record, xp level etc.
It was actually someone at EA (we follow most of them) who tweeted about FIFA using ELO years ago when someone asked why they met someone from a different division in Ultimate team. We wondered what on earth he meant by ELO and researched it. Then wrote the article. We don’t just guess things. Good point on checking your opponent. The EASFC is completely screwed however if you check https://www.easports.com/fifa/game-data/stats/INSERT USERNAME often it will get FUT and H2H stats confused or not be able to load FUT seasons data.
im sorry…but your comment “the better players tend not to buy IF players and stick with lower rated golds” (or however you phrased it… the players you are talking about are the sweaty Tw#ts who just pace abuse on ultra defensive counter attack… they are the type of people who buy the cheaper high rated pacey players… the kind of players im sick of rocking up against with my 5 TOTY players who normally boss any game they dont come across those scummy players.. until FUT is more about building an “ULTIMATE TEAM” and not just a sweaty pace abusing team then the game will always be a joke really.. real football is as much about skill and finesse as it is pace and long balls, ive spent hours over the last 4 months trading to acheive an 89 rated team that should blow almost any team out of the water, but i always come across sweaty pace abusers who it becomes a lot harder to win against… change it FIFA cos it just isnt fare to those who love the game and have perfected the art of skill and style instead of being a sweaty C$#T
We play a skill game using lower rated players with 4 and 5 star skills. Because IF players are no better for us. Know what you mean about pace abusers though.
Love the website!
How do you find your rating my ratio is 73-18-57 and I normally do seasons but I sometimes do tournaments.
Cheers, don’t really take much notice of it as lots of our games are testing FIFA and experimenting.
I also experienced some awkward thing yesterday! My record is 258-38-86 (only playing division). Yesterday i played 8 games of which i lost 7 and draw 1. All games (except for one) i lost by 1 goal difference. In all games i had the feeling that i could have also won them. I felt like i should have won at least 4 of these games for sure!
Great article and keep up the good work you are doing!
My question is – do you think having a 79 rated in form will create a a more difficult matchup compared to using a similar 79 rated NIF player?
No the game sees them both as a 79 player.
Thanks B4rca! Also, the article suggests that using a higher rated team with a bronze bench is a method to winning more. Maybe do a feature where you test the safest route to win division 1? Like testing with a team of only non rares, playing with low chemistry, the previously mentioned highly rated team with a bronze bench etc.
I’m fairly certain EA uses some sort of algorithm for FUT online similar to how offline Divisions is played i.e. some matches are Legendary, others Ultimate difficulty. In short, it’d be interesting to crack the code, so to speak 🙂
Firstly, great site keep up the good work. I have two questions.
1. Does the date you were “founded” on fifa UT affect the opposition ie founded jan 13 get players founded same time ?
2. Is it better to trade at different time for instance sell through the night and buy when most people are online ?
cheers

Hi. There is any reason to play almost always against opponents with the same registration month? It happens to me and to my friends a lot and in your (good) article you don’t mention anything about it.
That is a glitch, not actually the same month check end of game usually shows different month or year.
So is my current desperate situation down to this ELO system? I was an average Div 1 player for a while grabbing a few wins and generally surviving in Division 1. Then I changed formation to 4321 and got instant results, winning Division 1, and beating every opponent by at least 4 goals, I was winning with margins like 8-1, 6-0, 5-1 etc.
I logged in later that same day and got beaten badly, four times. One week later I am in Division 3 (and still sinking) having won about 3 matches all week, is there anything I can do before I quit? All I can think to do is start a new account but I really cant be bothered with that.

“The better FIFA players generally prefer to use lower rated players or silver teams where they have more control of the ball and player.”
Could you explain this? How do you have more control of the ball and player ?
Love the site, thanks for all the great info you put out.
Basically UT is too quick so In form players are harder to control at pace. So people like us prefer to use a player like normal Taraabt who has the control and skills and shot. You find top players who use TOTY players do really poorly compared to when they use normal gold teams or silver. Why KSI lost 7-0 using it.
Thanks B4RCA
They are harder to control but surely the creme de la creme will be able to harness that pace and beat those who cant and use silves or NIFs..At least that seems the logic to me.
What’s the best way, in your opinion, to learn how to skill. I’d love to skill, but for now I’m just a passer.
Play a few seasons where you dont try get promoted, just practice skills and what works and what doesnt
Learn 2 skills and keep using them in the games. When know them really well and can do them without thinking learn two more.
Found my “magic” rating number is betw. 84/86… Not that good of a player and any higher or lower than that rating and my w/l is much loer than 50% in that zone closer to 70%…
