Best defenders in FIFA 13

From testing formations we quickly realised something made a big difference – Defenders with high defensive work rate. This is important in FIFA 13 unless you use custom formations to change the work rate of players in your team. You can’t actually save custom formations in Ultimate Team (apart from during a game but it forgets after it!). Can in Head to Head though so more useful for all the Ultimate Team players. Although always good to know your players strengths in any mode.
So why is a high defensive work rate so important? Because FIFA 13 is really bad at player intelligence for defending. Or another argument could be from EA saying actually watch players like David Luiz during a game and show us his location during the 90 minutes. With high attack work rates players such as Luiz move forward all the time, and if don’t have high defensive work rate end up out of position lots. Not good when opponent players fast counter attacking football. High defensive work rate defenders are better at dealing with lobbed through balls too.

Are other defenders ok to use?

You could also look for defenders who might not have high defensive work rate but also don’t have high attack work rate. So some defenders might have medium set for both or even better low attack work rate and medium defence work rate. Although not as good as high defensive work rate players in our opinion. Another good stat to look for is interceptions. Where defenders read the game well and cut out passes. This can make up for a yard of pace although it can’t stop lobbed through balls so the high defensive work rate is really needed there.
