FIFA free kick tutorial. How to score free kicks in FIFA 19
Freekicks in FIFA 19 are still quite hard to score so you need to know the tips here. If you can score some free kicks then you have a good chance of winning close games. Our FIFA free kick tutorial will help you learn the different techniques and get scoring.
FIFA free kick tips
Selecting a free kick taker
Use the best free kick taker you have to make the process easier. To see who is most likely to succeed, look on the free kick selector menu once you have a free kick by holding RT. Select a player with a high FK accuracy, 80+ is usually good, as getting the kick on target is your main priority. A high power and curve stat can also be beneficial. Some players also have specialities which include free-kicks so USE them! Some also have power free kicks such as Naldo the Brazilian centre back.

How to aim free kicks in FIFA 19
Generally you want to be aiming left stick around 3 and half players in space away from where you want the ball to go. This is to allow for the natural curve of the ball. You can see in the video above how this works. We advise trying to score in the corner of the goal so aim 3 and half players wide as a guide.
Ball spin is one of the key parts of scoring. By default a right foot player taking a free kick will bend the ball to the left and a left foot player to the right. This is the natural curve. If you want to make the ball dip you push towards goal with left stick. If you want the ball to rise you hold the left stick away from goal. If you want to make the ball curl more than it would naturally to the left or right you hold the left stick in that direction. Don’t let go of the left stick until the ball has gone. You can also combine dip with curl. So dip and curl to the left hold the left stick diagonal top left for example.
How to do knuckleball free kicks in FIFA 19
To do a knuckleball free kick simply hold LB/L1 when you are taking the kick to hit a low, powerful free kick towards goal. This is more successful with straight free kick takers as they will be running onto the ball from a more direct approach allowing them to hit it with the top of the foot to add more power. This type of free kick can be used at distance but is most useful at medium range so you can bend it over the wall, 20-30yrds. Knuckleball video below from @TFVGaming.

How to defend free kicks in FIFA 19
When defending free kicks you can also move the wall towards the taker by pressing Y (Xbox) or triangle (PS3). Careful not to get booked! Or make the wall jump by pressing A or Cross. And if you move defenders into the wall and then press RB or R1 the player will stay in the wall and you can move another player around. Manually move players onto the goal line in the corner to try stop the methods above. And watch out for that pass to the side of the wall!
Can you do tutorials for PC?
It is the same game. If you mean because of controllers we recommend you buy the xbox style controller for PC. Then everything is the same.
I have the game on my tablet. And am using touch (tap and swipe) controls. I understand the game for tablets is quite different from the one for Xbox or pc or … .
Passing is made easy. But dribbling is nearly impossible. At least I don’t know how to. If anyone knows how to dribble on touch tablets, pls advise. (note, the virtual, floating joystick buttons as the alternative for touch/swipe controls are extremely difficult. That’s why I have set the controls to touch).
But Fredericks are almost impossible to score on touch controls and tablets. I line the wall along the near post as is advised. But no matter how I swipe, it either flies off the top, or hits the wall.
I have tried straight swipes, both quick and slow ones.
I have also t ride a curved swipe …. hoping the ball would curve. But it doesn’t.
I even have tried merely tapping the top corner of the goal. But it becomes a ”slow pass”, rather than a shot!
Can anyone advise how to play the game on touch tablets, please?
Thanks and cheers all
To be fair never played FIFA on a tablet but if anyone has maybe they can help!
i am having trouble playing against my friend he plays with bayern munich with their default formation 4-1-4-1 whereas my team is real madrid 1st i use to play with 4-5-1 attack formation and it was working good for me but since he shifted his formation to 4-1-4-1 i am facing problem to control bayern attack from wings can u suggest me which will be the right formation against this bayern munich in fifa14
Real Madrid suggest using 4-1-3-2 with Benzema and Ronaldo as strikers, Bale, Modric and DiMaria as midfielders then Alonso as the defensive midfielder. If he keeps using wings watch our defending crosses tutorial video on youtube – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r34IpUvMz3U
You guys are discussing based on use of xbox or joysticks. Do you have any advise for those ones using ‘touch-commands” on iPods?
No idea what Ipod touch commands do so can’t comment.
I don’t know if it’s just me or if perhaps everybody else encountering issues with your site.
It appears as if some of the text in your posts are running off
the screen. Can someone else please comment and let me know if this is happening to them as well?
This may be a issue with my browser because I’ve had this happen before.
Kudos

How do i practice with my career player as in arena mode I can score from freekicks anywhere. But in game in career I shot as normal like in arena at same speed and the shot goes miles over the bar. Also is there a way to win free kicks as I dont get many and am still waiting to get my first goal from free kicks.
Thanks
Try the heel to heel flick to get fouls from players standing in way of ball. Are you getting mixed up between an online and offline pro. And using same camera angle? Not sure otherwise.
i normally shield the ball providing theres only one oponent player, and no others to near…normally results in foul for fk
In Fifa 12 you could go to the arena and press down on the D-pad to then place the ball anywhere on the pitch to practice free kicks.
Is this possible in Fifa 13, if so how/where can we do this?
Thanks.
There is a practice arena and yes you can do same. Trying to remember what menu option is for it ha.
Hi!
I really love this site, I read it all the time to improve my game.
I have a question about free kicks.
You say hold the left stick up during the free kick. Does this mean UP even though the camera changes when the free kick is taken.
UP is aiming straight to goal at first, as the free kick is taken but then the camera changes and UP points to the side line. If you know what I mean. =)
And the same question for the right stick.
Thanks!
For free kicks hold it up regardless of camera angle. Bit strange as for rest of FIFA it depends on direction of the play.
It’s not strange at all, because the game always switches you to a “Pro” cam, when you’re “aiming” the free kick. Also applies for goal kicks. And you shouldn’t write walls of info about free kicks, if you don’t know the basics behind them. Not to sound like some kind of a troll, so I’d try and explain the actual mechanics behind free kicks. I hope you don’t moderate my post just because I’ve proven you wrong:
Since Fifa 08, FKs haven’t changed much, with the exception of few minor tweaks/changes. You were correct about “neutral” (no curve) flight of the ball and different kick takers. However, curving the ball has always been very easy and it has nothing to do with the right stick.
Currently, there are two types of Free kicks – normal and driven.
Driven FKs use a modifier – the LB/L1 button. If you hold it while you’re powering up your free kick – it’ll do a driven free kick, instead of a normal one. It’s more powerful, but it has less curve. Practice it a bit to get the hang of it.
Now, the reason why I made this post – curving the ball during a free kick.
it’s easy and it creates 3 sub-types for normal free kicks (also applies for Driven FKs).
How do you curve the ball – it’s simple. You just hold the left-stick in a specific direction, while you’re powering up your shot. I don’t release the left-stick at all, even after my shot.
The 3 sub-types for a right-footed kicker are:
1. Holding the left-stick up and left, while powering up your shot (and after). This creates a fast-moving shot with a good curve.
2. Holding the left-stick to the left, while powering up your shot (and after). This creates a shot with less (still fast) speed, but more curve. Ball is also flying a bit higher.
3. Holding left-stick back and left, while powering up your shot (and after). This creates, a rather weird, back/side spin on the ball and it rises during the entire flight. Curve is present, but not huge and I do not recommend this type of shot to beginners. I only use it with driven FKs.
Like I just mentioned, this method (and the only actual method) for curving the ball also applies to Driven shots (modified with LB/L1).
Now, in some previous installments of the game you could control the ‘dip’ and EXACTLY how much you curve the ball. However, in FIFA 12 they simplified it a bit and you can no longer control the dip of the ball.
Choosing how much curve you want depends on how much to the left you’re holding the left stick. If you’re holding it almost up and very little to the left, the curve will be very little and the ball will be pretty fast. More to the left = more curve, more curve = less speed on the ball.
Since driven FKs are a lot faster, they have less curve.
Practice all 6 types of FKs to master the art of free kicking.
Forgot to include shooting with another player, using the LT/L2 modifier. Curving the ball is the same as using the regular kicker (take the actual kicker’s preferred foot into account). You can even modify the shots with LB/L1, however they’re not driven, instead it adds A LOT of speed and curve to the ball. However, the ball travels really low, the farther away from goal you are, the better (so you can shoot above the wall). You can score some crazy goals from about 40m or so with this method.
P.S: It’s an advanced method of taking free kicks, so I don’t recommend it to beginners.
I hope I’m not breaking any rules, replying to my own posts, but I do needed to say that I’m not saying you were all wrong. Most of what you say is true. But curving the ball during the free kick is essential and you’ve failed in explaining how the mechanics behind it really work.
Good site, but you need to update/remove some of the myths. Feel free to test “my method”. It’s 100% working all the time.
Not actually sure you are disagreeing with us there. The amount of curl on a free kick depends on the player you use and their curve rating and free kick stat. Holding the stick in the direction just adds the spin as said.
Seriously, I don’t want to argue, but I agree/disagree on several things:
1. The presence of natural curl on a free kick depends on the FK animation style (example – Henry vs Beckham) as far as I can tell. Curve rating and free kick stat have nothing to do with it, because I’ve tested it with high/low stats and even some maxed (99) modded players. Most players don’t even have natural curl on their free kicks. It all depends on their FK animation.
2. Holding UP does apply the dip you’re talking about, but it does not add any curl whatsoever. Only curl you see is the natural curl, if present, of the kicker (depending on their FK animation).
3. Right Stick does nothing and there’s no aftertouch to free kicks in Fifa 12.
4. The rest of your tutorial (foot preference, stats, etc) I agree on.
5. Like I said, I like this site. I think it should be expanded into a FIFA wiki everybody goes to, but there’s some info that is very much incorrect.
For the past 5 years I practice free kicks almost every day, it’s become a daily routine for me. Even though I may not be very good at Fifa, when I talk about FKs – I know what I’m talking about. This isn’t one of those situations where somebody would see a tutorial on youtube and start talking about stuff like they’re the biggest expert.
P.S: Don’t EA has like an actual expert guide some companies release with their games?
Tell you what we will do. Create a google doc for free kicks and make it private, add us on twitter and let us know the password in a dm on there. We will test out the methods and if better than ours ie we score more from it will add it to the site for free kicks and give you credit and link to your twitter. Can also pm us the strategy side you want then.
Yea I find some of that to be true because it’s really hard to do a knuckle ball dip if your player isn’t in front of the ball(i.e. C.Ronaldo, Hulk, and the Brazilian long run-up FK takers). At the same time it’s really hard to get that crazy stop the keeper dead-in-his-tracks swerve unless you have a 90* FK taker like Beckham and some Italian guy I always forget.
Let’s say I’m not good with the right stick will the ball curve even when I don’t use it. Eg if I’m using beckham will it curl to the left by default?
Yes it will curve quite a bit naturally using Beckham. Look for their curve stat.
how would i know if the player is a straight or curved free kick taker?
Can only tell when you see them taking the free kick how they stand. If to one side they are curved. Look for their curve stat. Check players in exhibition mode so you know your players before using them.
well base on how much space between the kicker and the ball if the space is small then he will be curled kick taker if the space is big then h do only the striaght kick. hope this help
In your power free kick section it says to hold RB. is this supposed to be be LB, because wouldn’t that make it a finesse/curled free kick…?
Is indeed have amended! Cheers Daniel
